Federal Work-Study
Students with proven financial need are eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program. You must complete the FAFSA and be eligible for work-study funding. The total award for on-campus work-study is $2,500 annually. Students work a minimum of 10 hours per week and are paid the federal minimum wage by check twice a month.

Eligible students should log in to WebAdvisor and go to the Work-Study application to view available positions. Applications open the first Monday in August.
Positions are limited and competitive — work-study placement is not guaranteed.

Biology — Greenhouse
Help maintain the campus greenhouse.

Birdsong/Watts Schools Student Assistant
10–12 hours per week assisting faculty in the Watts and Birdsong schools.
Duties: Scanning, filing, data entry, copying, shredding, on-campus errands, organizing supplies, project research, answering phones, updating bulletin boards, and special projects.
Qualifications: Excellent communication skills, ability to work independently, attention to detail, and discretion with confidential information.

Chemistry — Lab Assistant
Duties: Prepare solutions for lab experiments, set up and take down equipment, consolidate waste materials, maintain stockroom, and update chemical inventory. Minimum 10 hours per week.
Preferred: Science major; completion of a year of general chemistry.

Physics — Lab Assistant
Duties: Set up and take down physics lab stations (8 identical stations), check equipment, communicate with instructors, keep the lab tidy, assist with copying/scanning, and proofread labs. STEM major preferred.

Athletics, Sports Information
Duties: Webcasting, broadcasting, filming/editing, photography, on-field/court duties, PA announcing, statistical work, scoreboard/clock operation, and administrative tasks.
Qualifications: Knowledge of athletics and rules. Flexible schedule with nights and weekends. Photography, Stat Crew, video editing, or broadcasting experience encouraged but not required.
Athletic Training Student Worker
Assist the athletic training staff with daily facility operations. This is not an athletic training position — you will support the facility's non-clinical functions.
Duties: Laundry, cleaning, restocking, water preparation, practice/game set-up, and administrative tasks. Some lifting required.
Qualifications: Reliable, responsible, independent, and capable of taking initiative. Morning and afternoon hours available. Non-student-athletes preferred.
Enrollment, Office Assistants
Duties: Data entry, typing, answering phones, filing, making copies, running errands, and packing mailings for prospects and applicants. Attention to detail is a must.

Assist the Enrollment Services leadership team with administrative and event planning responsibilities.
Duties: Answering phones, taking messages, labeling/stuffing envelopes, filing, running errands, and texting prospective students on behalf of the university.
Qualifications: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher. Energetic with a positive attitude and love for Batten University. Upperclassmen only.

Office Manager
Anchor the office, represent Batten Engaged at college functions, maintain office appearance, provide hospitality to visitors, facilitate volunteer sign-ups, plan and implement projects, and manage the volunteer database and social media accounts.
Qualifications: Professionalism, creativity, and proficiency with Excel, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms.

Environment
Develop and implement environmental awareness campaigns, work with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Lynnhaven River Now, Elizabeth River Project, and coordinate beach clean-ups and environmental programs.

Hampton Roads Public Schools
Oversee the Marlins Read and Marlins Count programs. Responsibilities include record keeping, recruiting/training volunteers, coordinating with school contacts, serving as a mentor, and driving the van. Valid driver's license and background check required. Upperclassmen only.

Health and Human Services
Develop programs addressing housing, hunger, and health issues. Work with CHKD, Sentara, local hospitals, Heritage United Methodist Church food pantry, FoodBank of SW Virginia, and Shelter during January session.

Facilities Management, Technician
Serve as a student maintenance technician supporting the Facilities Management department. Hands-on position assisting with all aspects of the university's maintenance plan.
Facilities Management, Sustainability
Serve as a work-study sustainability administrator supporting energy efficiency, recycling, and transportation research.
Qualifications: Minimum 3.0 GPA, proficiency in Microsoft Excel, organizational and time management skills, science or business department, research skills, and basic math.
Duties: Maintain greenhouse gas inventory, track commuting data, conduct surveys, collaborate with the PEIC committee and the Earth & Environmental Sciences department, attend meetings, and streamline sustainability practices.
Learning Center, Office Assistant
Seeking responsible students who exhibit discretion, trustworthiness, professionalism, and a positive attitude.
Duties: Staffing the front desk, answering phones, proctoring tests, delivery/pickup of testing materials, typing documents, serving as a scribe/note-taker for students with disabilities, recording tests and texts, copying materials, and light cleaning.
Greer Center, Landscaping & Plant Support
Work with staff to maintain landscaping around the Greer Center including the green roof, plantings, and stormwater ponds. Team-based work pulling weeds, watering, and maintaining gardens. May also assist with greenhouse plants, aquatics facility, and event setup.
Reports to Brian O'Neill, Director of Living Landscapes, and Elizabeth Malcolm.
Greer Center, Aquatic Support
Help maintain the Aquatic Lab. Responsibilities include feeding animals, cleaning tanks, daily water quality monitoring for freshwater and saltwater systems, and monthly pump/filter maintenance. Some weekend hours required. May also give tours, assist with events, or other Greer Center support.
Reports to Dr. Soraya Bartol.
Hofheimer Library, Interlibrary Loan Coordinator
Assist the Librarian/ILL Coordinator in processing interlibrary loans between Batten University and other institutions.
Duties: Processing incoming/outgoing loans, preparing shipments, checking out/in materials, and scanning items for electronic shipment.
Qualifications: Intermediate computer skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently. First-year students preferred (opportunity to build expertise over 4 years).

Hofheimer Library, Technical Services Assistant
Duties: Digital collections (digitization, file management, inventory, social media, metadata), stacks maintenance for special collections, basic book repair and processing, and various technical services projects.
Qualifications: Willingness to learn new skills, ability to work with various technologies, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, good communication.
Schedule: Daytime hours (8:30am–4:30pm), Monday–Friday. Runs from first week of semester through exam week.
Hofheimer Library, Office Assistants
Schedule: 6.5–7 hours per week in 1–1.5 hour shifts. Weekdays between 8:30am–10pm, Sundays 4pm–10pm. Must work during exam week.
Duties: Shelving, shelf reading, helping patrons, printer maintenance, and data entry.
Qualifications: Good customer service skills, positive attitude, dependable team player. Must be able to reach shelves (3"–75" height), lift 30 pounds, and push a loaded book truck.
The Lighthouse, Office Assistant
Duties: Greeting visitors, managing the Athenaeum common area, setting up/assisting with events, creating and posting flyers, data entry, and serving as a resource for students. May also include marketing tasks (web design, writing, graphic design, video) and projects related to Global Engagement or Career Development.
Qualifications: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong writing, creativity, willingness to learn, ability to work independently. Returning students must have a 2.0 GPA.

IT Help Desk Technician
Assist faculty, staff, and students with computer-related issues. Answer phones and provide direct support in the lab. Must be dependable and courteous.
Qualifications: Attention to detail, basic computer/software knowledge, good communication skills, ability to work independently. Willing to learn on the job. Hours include daytime, evening, and weekends.

Maintain and repair the university's fleet of computers and technology assets. Working knowledge of PC and Mac applications including Microsoft Office and Google Apps required. Some walking to support computers across campus.

Marketing & Communications, Photographer
Build your portfolio through collaboration on a variety of projects while helping tell the Batten University story.
Duties: Photograph campus events, edit/upload/caption photos, maintain a professional appearance at events. May also assist with writing, editing, researching, social media, or graphic design.
Qualifications: Interest in photography with at least basic skill level, willingness to take direction and improve. Communication, art, theater, business, or English majors preferred but not required. Flexible schedule including Saturdays and some evenings. Access to an SLR camera preferred.

Financial Aid, Office Assistant
Duties: Greet students and families, answer phones, take messages, label/stuff envelopes, organize and file student records, and pick up supplies and print shop orders.

Goode Center, Theatre Technical Assistants
Duties: Construct, paint, and install scenery; set up seating and stage sets; install/focus lighting; sew costumes and create accessories; build props; operate lighting, sound, projection, and recording equipment; scenic painting; run Goode Center events; support all Fine & Performing Arts areas as needed.
Schedule: Flexible hours with nights and weekends as scheduled.
Qualifications: Ability to climb a 14-foot ladder, lift/carry 25+ pounds, and knowledge of basic construction principles (or willingness to learn). Prior theatrical experience helpful but not required.
