ROTC at Batten
Batten University offers students the opportunity to train for military leadership through ROTC programs in both the Army and Navy. Both operate through partnerships with established regional programs, giving Batten students access to some of the best military training infrastructure in the country — all while earning their degree on our campus.
Army ROTC — The Marlin Company
The Marlin Company operates as part of Old Dominion University's Monarch Battalion through an extension agreement. Through elective classes and field training, students develop leadership, communication, and strategic skills that prepare them for military service or any career field. Upon completion, graduates are commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army — Active Duty, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard.
In addition to merit- and need-based financial aid, Army ROTC students at Batten have access to military scholarships, monthly living allowances, and a University grant of $1,000 that may be applied to tuition during their first and second years.
The Army ROTC office is located on the first floor of Godwin Hall, across from the Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs offices.

Navy ROTC
Batten students participate in Navy ROTC through the Hampton Roads Naval ROTC Consortium — one of the largest and best-positioned units in the country. The proximity to Naval Station Norfolk, the world's largest naval base, along with a master jet base, Little Creek Amphibious Base, and East Coast SEAL teams, provides access to unparalleled hands-on training alongside academic coursework and physical training.
Navy ROTC offers competitive scholarships, and Batten ROTC students may also have access to additional University funds.

Navy Preparatory Program (NPP)
The NPP is a structured preparatory year for incoming first-year students who show strong leadership potential and motivation to serve but may benefit from additional academic and physical development before entering the full NROTC program.
Eligibility:
- Incoming first-year students, ages 17–22, accepted to Batten as full-time students
- U.S. citizens (or on track to become citizens)
- Demonstrate commitment to military service and leadership
- Complete the FAFSA and the NPP Application
What's included: Tuition, housing, meals, and fees are fully covered by Batten for the preparatory year.
What to expect:
- Foundational academic courses in math, science, and English
- Physical training, military drills, and character development
- Minimum 2.8 GPA requirement and passing the Navy Physical Fitness Assessment
- New Student Indoctrination at Great Lakes, IL
After the preparatory year: Students who meet all requirements are awarded a four-year national NROTC scholarship within the Hampton Roads Consortium and continue at Batten as full NROTC members, on track to commission as officers in the U.S. Navy upon graduation.
