Overflow crowds packed the Jane P. Batten Student Center on Friday, March 4, and Saturday, March 5, when Virginia Wesleyan hosted the opening rounds of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament.

alt“To be picked to host any round is a feather in the College's cap,” says VWC Athletic Director, Joanne Renn, “but the way we did it and how we were received was simply awesome—our best job ever. I was so proud of our Virginia Wesleyan community and the way we made our guests feel welcome.”

Coach Renn also commended VWC students for their home court enthusiasm.

“Our students energized all of us. There has never been a better representation of a College athletic event—loud, proud, creative, respectful, yet supportive of the Marlins. They were all awesome.”

The Marlins prevailed during the opening rounds with victories over both Delaware Valley (93-63) on Friday night and Franklin & Marshall (79-71) on Saturday night, advancing to the Round of 16.

VWC men's basketball continued its trek in the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts where they took on the Ephs on March 11. In a late comeback during the final four minutes of the game, Williams emerged victorious with a 79-73 win, ending the Marlins highly successful season.

VWC's appearance in the NCAA tournament was its seventh in a row under the leadership of head coach David Macedo. The Marlins played throughout the 2010-11 season without a senior in the lineup.
