Work & Learn Program
More than 450 students participate in Batten University 's Work and Learn Program each year, earning tuition credits while gaining professional experience. The program provides meaningful on-campus employment that strengthens skills, builds community, and helps offset the cost of education.
The program supports students through:
- Opportunities that provide operational staffing for the university and tuition cost reduction for students
- Character development, professional skills, and community involvement
- Effective, high-quality feedback and mentorship from supervisors
Five Pathways
Campus Cooperative
Students receive a tuition grant in exchange for approximately 10 hours per week of campus work. A completed FAFSA is required, but federal work-study eligibility is not. Compensation is applied directly to the student's account.
Federal Work-Study
Federally funded on-campus employment for students with demonstrated financial need. Students work an average of 10 hours per week and receive biweekly paychecks at minimum wage, which can be used for personal expenses or applied toward their balance.
Professional Development Academy
Combines classroom learning with cooperative education placements at community employers. Students earn academic credit, and a tuition credit while building career-ready experience.
OPUS
Students assist operational areas of the university alongside full-time staff, completing campus projects in exchange for a reduction in their account balance. A hands-on way to contribute to the campus community.
Residential Leadership
Resident Assistants are placed in each residential building and are responsible for floor programming, duty rotations, community building, and administrative tasks. RAs receive a compensation package in exchange for their leadership role.
How to Participate
All Work and Learn pathways require a completed FAFSA. Once enrolled, speak with the Financial Aid Office or your enrollment counselor about which pathway is the best fit for your goals and schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Students must complete the FAFSA to qualify for all positions within the program. The one exception is Residential Leadership, which does not require a completed FAFSA.
Students in the Campus Cooperative, OPUS, and Residential Leadership programs receive a tuition credit applied directly to their annual tuition — they do not receive biweekly paychecks.
Students hired through Federal Work-Study receive biweekly paychecks until their total award amount has been used. These earnings can be used for personal expenses or returned to the Office of Finance to apply toward your balance.
