Undergraduate Research Program
The Undergraduate Research Program (URP) fosters high-impact student learning through faculty-mentored scholarship and creative production. Research projects explore a research question and produce a scholarly or creative work intended for public presentation or publication — helping students become active members of the intellectual and professional community at Batten University and beyond.
Undergraduate research opportunities exist across most majors. Many departments have formal research courses built into their programs — including the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, and social sciences — where students work closely with faculty mentors to develop and conduct original research, then present their findings at the semester's Academic Symposium.
Grants & Funding
The URP offers two types of grants to support student researchers with faculty mentors.
Research Project Grants
Project grants support students undertaking original research or creative production. Funded projects should seek novel scholarly insights or produce original creative work, add to the existing body of knowledge in a discipline, and involve critical inquiry regarding the process and results of the project.

Research Conference Travel Grants
Conference grants support students traveling to present at or attend academic conferences, performances, or exhibitions. Two grant types are available depending on whether the student is presenting or attending.

Academic Symposium
The Academic Symposium is held each semester and brings together students from across all four Athenaeum programs to share their research, creative projects, internship experiences, and global engagement work. Presentations are open to the entire campus community, and students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences and offer advice to peers preparing to undertake their own.

SHIPP: Summer Funding
The Summer High Impact Practice Program (SHIPP) offers competitive grants for students pursuing credit-bearing research experiences during the summer. Research SHIPP grants fund up to $1,000 and include individualized faculty mentoring.
