Located on the second floor of Clarke Hall, the Learning Center is where academic support happens. Peer tutors, professional writing consultants, alternate testing, and academic counselors are all here — and walk-ins are always welcome. Whether you’re stuck on one concept or struggling across the board, this is the place to start.

Learn From Someone Who Gets It
Subject tutors are top-ranked students, picked by faculty and trained specifically on the courses you need help with. They’ve already taken the class and excelled in it. Sessions are available one-on-one or in small groups — tutors can also help with study skills, time management, and making sense of your syllabus. Tutoring is available during the fall and spring semesters; online tutoring is available year-round.

Writing Help for Every Stage
The Writing Studio helps with any writing task at any point in the process. Whether you’re staring at a blank page or polishing a final draft, Writing Studio staff meet you where you are — not where they think you should be.
- Writing Consultants professionals with graduate degrees, often adjunct faculty at Batten, available for any level of writing work
- Peer Writing Tutors student writers nominated by faculty and trained in writing theory and practice
- Any writing assignment essays, research papers, creative writing, personal statements, lab reports

Not sure where to start?
Writing consultants can help at any stage — you don’t need a draft to come in. Bring the assignment prompt, your notes, or just the ideas in your head.

Online writing tutoring is available through the summer and January term — not just when classes are in session.
Alternate Testing Arrangements
The Testing Center provides a quiet, controlled environment for students who have documented accommodations requiring alternate testing conditions. Makeup test arrangements are also available with instructor approval.

Schedule in advance — don’t wait until the week of your exam. Your instructor needs to send your test to us ahead of time, and appointment slots fill up around midterms and finals.

Disability Support Services
Academic Accommodations
Students with disabilities are entitled to reasonable academic accommodations under the ADA and Section 504. The Disability Services Office handles documentation review, eligibility determination, and accommodation coordination — including the Authorized Accommodations Forms you bring to each instructor every semester.
Accommodations don’t happen automatically. You need to register, provide documentation, and renew each semester. The Disability Support Services page walks through the full five-step process.
Academic Renewal
A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required for good standing and for graduation. If your GPA falls below that, you may be placed on academic probation — a formal warning that your standing is at risk.
Probation isn’t the end. Academic Counselors in the Learning Center work specifically with students on probation to build a plan for getting back to good standing. You’ll be required to meet with your counselor, and that meeting exists to help you.

On academic probation?
Academic Counselors hold a required information meeting at the start of each fall and spring semester, followed by individual appointments. Watch for an email from your assigned counselor.
