At Batten University, the Campus Recreation Program is your gateway to vibrant, inclusive recreational experiences tailored for every skill level and interest. Our mission is to spark personal growth, foster social connections, and encourage healthy living through a dynamic array of fun and challenging activities.
We believe in empowering students to shape our programs and set annual goals, ensuring that every event and adventure reflects the interests and energy of our campus community. UREC also offers a variety of student work opportunities, allowing you to gain valuable experience while contributing to the recreational landscape of campus.
Jack E. & Bill D. Lingo Fitness Center
Step into the Batten Fitness Center, a sprawling 5,000 square feet of pure fitness potential designed to kickstart or elevate your personal fitness journey. Equipped with top-of-the-line gear from Matrix, Rogue, Precor, and Star Trac, the Fitness Center offers endless possibilities to challenge yourself and transform your routine — whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just getting started.
Aquatics
Dive into the excitement at our infinity pool — the heartbeat of the Men’s and Women’s Swim Teams. With 8 competition lanes and a depth reaching up to 9.5 feet, it’s a versatile aquatic playground for lap swimming, training, our annual Splash Contest, or just a refreshing dip.
Our lifeguards are talented student workers trained and certified right here on campus. Lifeguard opportunities are open to all students, with in-house training provided.
Rock Climbing Wall
At a towering 36 feet, the climbing wall is more than a recreational feature — it’s an adventure waiting to be scaled. Crafted by NICROS, it fuses West Coast climbing style with the cutting-edge A.R.T. wall design, offering a range of routes and difficulty levels for climbers of any skill. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a curious beginner, this wall is set to redefine your expectations of indoor climbing.
Disc Golf Course
The Marlin Disc Golf Course has recently completed a redesign of several holes and is back open for play. Featuring INNOVA Disctcatcher Pro targets, the 9-hole course offers challenging play for disc golfers of any skill level. Beginning behind Clarke Hall, the course travels half a mile through Batten University’s park-like campus, ending at Rose Lawn. Discs are available for check-out at the UREC office in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

Intramural Sports mixes friendly competition across a diverse array of activities — whether you’re diving into a one-day tournament or committing to a full season.

ORCA: Outdoor Adventures
The Outdoor Rental Center and Adventures program provides wilderness experiences and other experiential activities that enhance self and community discovery, encourage personal growth, and connect you with the natural world — right from campus.
Annual trips: WV Whitewater Rafting on the Gauley River, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia State Parks, NC Outer Banks, Florida Keys Spring Break
Free equipment rental: Tents, sleeping bags, cook sets, backpacks, coolers, surfboards, stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, bikes, golf clubs, and more.
