Just weeks after officially acquiring Sentara College of Health Sciences, Batten University will celebrate the next milestone in the partnership by hosting the Sentara College of Health Sciences (SCOHS) commencement ceremony on Batten University's Virginia Beach campus for the first time. The Aug. 13 ceremony will honor 24 graduates receiving Master of Science in Nursing (Entry to Nursing Practice) and RN-to-BSN degrees.
Announced in June 2025, SCOHS and the University began working together to ensure a seamless transition that would preserve student continuity while integrating SCOHS's distinguished healthcare programs into the University's academic portfolio. The partnership was designed to honor SCOHS's 130-year legacy of excellence in healthcare education while expanding opportunities for future students through the resources of a comprehensive university.
The integration was approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the University’s accrediting body, in June 2026, and the transaction officially closed at the end of that month. On July 1, 2026, the institution became Batten University, with Sentara College of Health Sciences continuing as a division of the university. Batten University now awaits action from the U.S. Department of Education to complete the regulatory integration.

At the same time, it honors the distinguished legacy of Sentara College of Health Sciences, preserving its tradition of excellence while positioning Batten University for continued growth and impact."
Dennis Matheis, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sentara Health, will deliver the commencement keynote address. In recognition of his exceptional leadership and enduring commitment to healthcare, education, and community partnership, Batten University will confer upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa.
The ceremony will also recognize two distinguished leaders whose dedication helped shape generations of healthcare professionals. Dr. Angela Taylor and Dr. Cynthia Banks will each receive emerita status in recognition of their distinguished service and lasting contributions to Sentara College of Health Sciences.
