Batten University is proud to announce that Eleanor VanDuyne, a sophomore double majoring in Political Science and International Studies, has been selected as the University's inaugural recipient of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) Presidential Scholars Program.
Launched in 2026, the VFIC Presidential Scholars Program is designed to cultivate the next generation of values-based leaders by recognizing one outstanding rising second-year student from each of VFIC's 17 member institutions. Presidential Scholars are selected by their college or university presidents based on demonstrated leadership, a commitment to service, academic achievement, and a passion for strengthening their communities.
"Eleanor embodies the qualities this program was created to celebrate," said Scott D. Miller, President of Batten University. "As a promising scholar and a dedicated intern for the World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads, she leads with integrity and serves others with purpose. We are proud to see her recognized among Virginia's most promising student leaders and look forward to watching her continue to grow through this extraordinary opportunity."
Made possible through the generosity of Bonnie and Wick Moorman, the Presidential Scholars Program provides recipients with a transformative leadership experience that includes:
- A generous annual scholarship for up to three years;
- Individual mentorship from their college or university president;
- Leadership development seminars and statewide networking opportunities with leaders from business, government, and the nonprofit sector; and
- A fully funded experiential learning opportunity, such as study abroad, an internship, or a faculty-guided research project.
In addition to financial support, scholars will participate in a statewide leadership cohort that brings together students from across Virginia's independent colleges and universities. Through collaborative learning, professional development, and mentorship, participants will strengthen the skills needed to lead with purpose in their professions and communities.

The inaugural 2026–2029 cohort includes one Presidential Scholar from each of VFIC's 17 member institutions. VFIC plans to add a new class of scholars each year, creating a growing network of alumni committed to making meaningful contributions throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.
