Four Students, a Faculty and a Staff Member, Present Research at Sociology Conference

A total of four presentations will be given at the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

Norfolk/ Virginia Beach, Va. – Four Virginia Wesleyan College students, a faculty member and a staff member are presenting research at the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology (AACS) annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, from October 7-11.

Associate Professor of Sociology, Dr. Kathy Stolley, and Director of Community Service, Diane Hotaling , are accompanying four senior students to the conference entitled, “Practical Sociology: Meeting Today’s and Tomorrow’s Challenges.”

Virginia Wesleyan students Kathleen Kern from Chesapeake, Va.; Mallori King from Westlake, Ohio; and Ashley Buck from Midlothian, Va.; will present with Stolley and Hotaling. Kathleen Kern will also conduct a solo-presentation along with Tiffany Brown from Norfolk,Va.

The group will give four presentations:

Ashley Buck, Mallori King and Kathy Stolley: “Shelter-Behind the Scenes: Unveiling the Stereotypes on a College Campus”

Kathleen Kern: “Pan-Hellenic Women and Release Figures: How Sorority Women Think a New Method of Recruitment Will Affect Their Organizations”

Tiffany Brown: “Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are: Gender Identity and College”

“It is a well-deserved recognition of the quality of these students' work that their projects have been accepted for presentation at this conference,” said Stolley. “Their presentations each highlight the ways applied sociology transfers textbook material into 'real-life' and some exciting ways that application is contributing to our Virginia Wesleyan campus community, and beyond.”

The Virginia Wesleyan College undergraduate research program funded the cost for the students to attend the annual conference.
