Virginia Wesleyan faculty presents special “Love Liberally” programs during regularly scheduled classes Feb. 14-15

(NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH) “Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind,” observes Helena in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Some VWC professors will attempt to expand that most complex of romantic instruments—the human brain—with a series of informal presentations focused on the theme of love during their regularly scheduled classes on Monday, February 14, and Tuesday, February 15.
Titled “Love Liberally,” the series isn’t just for English majors immersing themselves in Shakespeare’s romantic sonnets. The areas of study covered will vary widely from music and sociology to mathematics and criminal justice.
“A liberal arts education purports to imbue learners with a variety of ‘frames of reference,’” explains “Love Liberally” organizer Lee Jordan-Anders, professor of music. Those frames of reference allow for a variety of perspectives, different ways of looking at the world.
In that vein, Jordan-Anders says, participating professors will take a common topic—love—and explore it through the unique lens of their individual disciplines.
All events are open to the campus community. Faculty and students are invited to attend as their schedules allow.
“It will be a great opportunity for students to explore another teacher or subject without being enrolled in that particular class,” says Jordan-Anders. “It will also be fun for us in that we get to prepare a lecture somewhat off our beaten track.”
