Old Time Fiddler Mark Campbell Performs Live on Campus
An expert on Appalachian region fiddle and banjo styles, Campbell performs at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18. Free and open to the public.
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan College’s Winter Session Program presents Fiddler Mark Campbell live in concert at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, in the Blocker Science Auditorium on the College campus.
Former Virginia State Fair and West Virginia State Folk Festival fiddling champion, Campbell will play old-time fiddle and banjo tunes of Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky.

This special event is in conjunction with the Winter Session course, "Music and Folk Culture of Southern Appalachians,” taught by Virginia Wesleyan’s associate professor of history Dr. Dan Margolies. This one-credit course meets Monday night during the three-week session.
“Winter Session is an exciting opportunity for students to focus on one course intensively for three weeks and earn college credit,” said Director of Winter Session Dr. Susan Wansink. “Students can take unique courses on-campus that are not offered during the regular semester, participate in travel courses and lighten their load for their spring semester.”
Growing up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Mark Campbell began playing the guitar and banjo at the age of 10. He learned bowing and picking styles from some of the giants of last generation of great musicians of North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. In 2008, he was named the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities' Master fiddler. Campbell was also the 2001 Champion Fiddler at the Appalachian String Band Festival at Clifftop, W.Va., has twice won the State Fair of Virginia fiddle contest, and has won the West Virginia State Folkfestival banjo and fiddle competitions. >>View Mark Campbell’s Web site
About Winter Session
Offered each year between the fall and spring semesters, Winter Session is an optional three-week term that complements Virginia Wesleyan’s academic program. Winter Session provides opportunities for students to focus with members of the faculty on a single academic subject and earn course credit. On-campus courses and travel courses are available.
