The Virginia Wesleyan College Concert Series opens the 2010-11 season with pianist Lee Jordan-Anders in “Picture This: Images of Women in Music and Art” on Friday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Hofheimer Theater on the College campus.
The program pairs images of works of art from the collection of the Chrysler Museum with music. Degas meets Debussy, Scarlatti accompanies Boncori, and Messiaen ponders more than one Madonna and Child. Other pairings include Gauguin’s Loss of Virginity with Ravel’s “Pavane for a Dead Princess,” and Clara Schumann’s Scherzo in C minor with a portrait by Paula Modersohn-Becker.
Jordan-Anders is Professor of Music and Artist-in-Residence at Virginia Wesleyan College. She joined the faculty in 1986 and has served as Chair of the Humanities Division, has been honored as a Batten Professor, and continues to serve as Music Department Coordinator.
The concert will be introduced by Dr. Joyce Bernstein Howell, Professor of Art History at Virginia Wesleyan, who will “set the stage” with a brief commentary on the art works which will be portrayed during the concert.

The 2010-11 Fine Arts series at Virginia Wesleyan College offers an exciting array of events for the college community and all of Hampton Roads.
