Recreation & Leisure Studies Program Earns Continuing Accreditation
One of only 100 programs nationally accredited, the program is the fifth most declared major at the College.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – The Council on Accreditation sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has approved continuing accreditation of Virginia Wesleyan’s College’s Recreation and Leisure Studies Program until October 2014.
Recreation and Leisure Studies, an interdisciplinary major, is the fifth most declared major at the College. By combining the concepts, skills and perspectives of recreation and leisure studies courses with carefully selected courses, students in the program may select from three career tracks: therapeutic recreation, leadership or sport, tourism and recreation management.
Virginia Wesleyan’s Recreation and Leisure Studies Program was commended for the following:
- 25 years of commitment to the accreditation process
- Innovative mechanism for securing practitioner input
- Exceptional care and concern for students from the faculty
- Impressive alumni and practitioner support of the program
“This distinction is a great honor for Virginia Wesleyan’s Recreation and Leisure Studies Program as there are fewer than 100 programs accredited in the entire nation,” said Dr. Doug Kennedy, coordinator of the Recreation and Leisure Studies Department.
The Recreation and Leisure Studies Program was first accredited in October 1984. Additional accreditations for the College include The Professional Education Program, accredited by a process approved by the Board of Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
