Faculty and students travel to Walt Disney World, Maui and Ecuador during the break between the fall and spring semester.
Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College is offering three exciting travel courses for students during Winter Session 2010. Through these courses, students will explore indigenous cultures in the Andes mountain range in South America, take a behind the scenes look at Disney World in Florida and examine travel’s impact on the culture in Hawaii.
Spanish 210: “Icons, Myths and Rituals of the Hispanic Civilization”
Learn about Latin American native and modern cultures through old and modern beliefs, myths and rituals of indigenous communities of Mexico, the Caribbean and South America through a trip to South America. While the primary destination of this course is Ecuador, students will also have the opportunity to visit Quito, Cuenca, Saraguro, El Cañar and other towns in the Andes mountain range. During the trip, students will observe and record all observations in a journal in preparation for a final project and presentation.

Communications 333: “Walt Disney’s America”
Led by Professor of Communications Dr. Kathy Merlock Jackson and C.S. Lewis Endowed Professor of Communications and Christian Thought Dr. Terry Lindvall, this course will examine Walt Disney in American culture. Students will have an on-campus experience and then spend six days at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., where they will sneak behind the scenes to meet with Disney executives and entertainment planners. Students will study the ecosystem and myths of the Disney cultural empire, while examining Disney artifacts from communications, design and business perspectives. The course is open to all students.

Recreation 237: “Maui to Moguls: Adventure Travel’s Impact on Culture and the Environment”
In addition to an excursion to a Virginia ski and snowboard resort, students in this course will also travel to Maui, Hawaii. Students will observe the impact of adventure travel on the world through biking down mountains, snorkeling coral reefs and participating in a luau. “These trips will illustrate how activities as diverse as skiing, snowboarding, snorkeling, hiking, windsurfing and biking have an effect upon local culture, the economy and preservation of the environment,” said Batten Professor of Recreation and Leisure Studies Dr. Doug Kennedy. Class work includes expectation and reality papers, as well as on-site presentations.
