Virginia Wesleyan is a thriving place for arts lovers. Make plans now to experience these visual and performing arts events happening on campus in spring 2015.
Neil Britton Art Gallery
Mark Campbell’s “The James River from the Mountains to the Sea” (January 5-February 5), captures the visual art and award-winning music of this Appalachian fiddler and banjoist. Hosted by VWC Professor of History Dan Margolies. The juried exhibition, “Super Bowls” (February 27-April 10) features entries from a nationwide pool of artists, challenging the aesthetic and conceptual possibilities of what a bowl might be. Information is forthcoming on the Senior Art Exhibition (TBA), in which VWC students will display their senior thesis work. Admission to the Neil Britton Gallery, located inside Hofheimer Library, is free and open to the public.
Theatre
For its spring production, the Virginia Wesleyan College Theatre Department presents Lisa Loomer’s “Distracted” (March 4-8), the story of a boy with attention-deficit disorder and how it affects his family. Directed by VWC Professor of Theatre Sally Shedd. Performances take place in Hofheimer Theater. Public ticket prices range from $10-15; free to the campus community. Virginia Wesleyan College Concert Series
The VWC Concert Series continues with The Thirteen (April 10). Under the direction of Matthew Robertson, this New York-based ensemble will perform Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces. Additional performances include violist Amadi Azikiwe (April 20); and soprano Billye Brown Youmans (May 4). All performances take place at 7:30 p.m. in Hofheimer Theatre with public ticket prices ranging from $5-15; free to the VWC community with ID. Made possible in part by the Dougherty Visiting Artist Fund and the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
A World of Music
A World of Music, a daytime series exploring the sounds around us, continues with Word-Beat (March 26). The artistry of singer/actor Charles Williams combines with the global-jazz percussion of Tom Teasley in this program of African proverbs and inspirational texts by Langston Hughes and Nelson Mandela. This series concludes with a performance by marimbist Larissa Venzie (April 14). All performances take place at 11 a.m. in Hofheimer Theatre. Free to all; reservations not required.
Student Music Performances
The Virginia Wesleyan Chorale and the Wesleyan Singers continue their season with The Presidential Masterworks Series (March 9), featuring Gabriel Fauré’s choral classic Requiem in D minor, Opus 48; and his Piano Trio in D minor, Opus 12, performed by the Alborada Trio. Spring performance schedule also includes Women of Wisdom (April 27), a celebration of music by female composers featuring composer-in-residence Susan LaBarr. All performances take place at 7:30 p.m. in Hofheimer Theatre and are free to all. For more information, call 757.455.3282.
Center for Sacred Music
CSM will host the 2015 Sacred Music Summer Conference (July 27-August 1), a non-denominational showcase of instruction steeped in the Wesley tradition of training minds and warming hearts. More than 45 workshop sessions led by 16 guest clinicians and evening worship, hymn festivals, and concerts highlight the week. Barclay Sheaks Gallery
This display of works by Barclay Sheaks, the late Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at Virginia Wesleyan, is an expression of the value of liberal and lifelong learning. Admission to the Barclay Sheaks Gallery, located inside Godwin Hall, is free and open to the public.
