Two Students to Present at National Conference on Undergraduate Research
Seniors Elizabeth Melby and Eric Webb join more than 2,000 scholars from across the nation, April 15-17, at the University of Montana.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Two Virginia Wesleyan College students have been accepted to present at the 24th National Undergraduate Research Conference (NCUR), April 15-17, at the University of Montana.
English major Elizabeth Melby ’10 from Winchester, Va., will present “Reflections on the Architecture of Sentences.” Her presentation will explore the process of structural configurations such as line breaks in poetry and the variation of sentence lengths in fiction. She will use her own personal works, including the poem “Coma,” and an excerpt from a short fiction piece entitled “The Grub Estate,” to illustrate and discuss her writing.
English major Eric Webb ’10 from Virginia Beach, Va., will present “Craft as Necessity: Poetic Creation through Revision.” His presentation will explore the revision process as one of the primary keys of bringing a poem from conception to creation. He will use his own personal poems, the sonnet “Metronome,” and the free-verse “Wealth,” to elucidate the necessity of revision as part of poetic creativity.
Each student's abstract was accepted in the conference's category of PowerPoint Presentation in Performing or Visual Arts, and each will have 15 minutes to share his/her creative process.
“Only five students this year are presenting at the NCUR in the specific category that Elizabeth and Eric are presenting,” said Ms. Vivian Teter, Batten Professor of English and faculty adviser for the students’ research. “I'm grateful that the NCUR welcomes presentations in the fine arts that include students' original works. Elizabeth and Eric are both excellent writers, and it's been a pleasure to work with them.”
The National Conference on Undergraduate Research is dedicated to promoting undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity in all fields of study. This annual gathering welcomes up to 2,600 scholars and their faculty mentors from all institutions of higher learning in the United States. NCUR creates a unique environment for the celebration and promotion of undergraduate student achievement.
