Norfolk/ Virginia Beach, Va. – Two Virginia Wesleyan College students and two professors attended and presented research at the 2009 Virginia Water Research Conference, October 15 – 16 at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.
John Maravich ’11 from Virginia Beach, Va., Lan Tran ’10 from Chesapeake, Va., Assistant Professor of Ocean & Atmospheric Studies Dr. Elizabeth Malcolm and Batten Professor of Biology Dr. Maynard Schaus presented research on the topic “Water Resources in Changing Climates,” focusing on the political, economical and environmental changes due to water resources.
Maravich and Tran presented a poster on their independent research through Virginia Wesleyan’s Green Roof project entitled, “Effectiveness of Amendments in Reducing the Release of Nutrients and Mercury from Green Roofs.” Co-authors for the research include Malcolm, Schaus and Dr. Margaret Reese, the Thomas R. Fanney Distinguished Associate Professor of Mathematics.
Schaus gave an oral presentation "Biomanipulation Effects on Nutrient Release by Gizzard Shad in Central Florida Lakes."
Keynote speakers for the conference included Preston Bryant, Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources and Virginia Burkett, Chief Scientist for Global Change Research, U.S. Geological Survey.
“The conference was a great learning experience and very successful for the students,” said Malcolm. “The students received good feedback from their presentations and established new contacts in the field of research.”
