John F. Malbon of Virginia Beach has been elected as the next Chair of the Board of Trustees at Virginia Wesleyan University, according to VWU President Scott D. Miller. The Chair-elect will assume the role on July 1 when current Board Chair David L. Kaufman concludes his three-year term.
“Virginia Wesleyan is pleased to welcome John Malbon as Chair of our Board of Trustees,” Dr. Miller said. “A respected business leader in Coastal Virginia and devoted friend of our University, John brings many strengths to the institution for its next phases of growth and prominence, building on the excellent service of [retiring Chair] David Kaufman.”
Malbon joined the VWU Board of Trustees in 2012 and currently serves on the Investment and Advancement Committees. He is the retired Chairman and CEO of PAPCO, Inc., a Virginia Beach-based petroleum marketing and distribution company.
An active leader in the community, Malbon currently serves on the Commonwealth Transportation Board, TowneBank Virginia Beach Advisory Board, the Hampton Roads Community Foundation Board, the Virginia Beach Vision Board, and the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival Board. He previously served as co-chair of the Envision Virginia Beach 2040 Committee, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Chairman of Sentara Healthcare’s Board of Directors, and as a member of the Resort Advisory Commission.
In 2006 Malbon was named King Neptune, in 2007 he was recognized as the First Citizen of Virginia Beach by the Virginia Beach Jaycees, and he was named Associate of the Year by Tidewater Associated General Contractors in 2011.
Malbon holds a degree in business administration from James Madison University. He is a native of Virginia Beach, where he currently resides with his wife, Harriet. The Malbons have two children, Joshua and Clara. His brother, David, is a 1986 alumnus of Virginia Wesleyan.
The Board also elected three other new officers for 2019-20. Susan S. Goode of Norfolk was elected Vice Chair, Dr. Nancy T. DeFord of Virginia Beach will assume the role of Secretary, and J. Tim Bailey '83 of Charlotte, NC, will serve as Treasurer.
