Virginia Wesleyan College's newest Marlins arrived with a splash for New Student Orientation on June 24 and 27

Approximately 350 new Marlins arrived with a splash June 24 and 27, as the Virginia Wesleyan College Class of 2020 set sail on their VWC journey with a nautical-themed New Student Orientation (NSO). The College anticipates welcoming nearly 500 new students when classes begin in August.
Following a welcome from VWC President Scott D. Miller, new students and their families were encouraged to create their own orientation journey by choosing which information sessions and special “destinations” they’d like to visit. Students also met with advisors to build their fall class schedules.
Among the information sessions were “Navigating the Academic Program,” “Roommate 101,” ”Money, Money Financial Aid,” and “Campus Security & The Residence Life Team.” Students playing a sport were required to attend “DIII Scholar-Athlete Expectations,” and all students were invited to learn about opportunities for internships, study away and undergraduate research at a session about The Lighthouse: Center for Exploration & Discovery.
A guiding philosophy for this year’s NSO was to offer engaging activities that left new students feeling invigorated and immersed in Wesleyan culture. Featured destinations ran continuously throughout the day, giving students the chance to explore VWC’s beautiful 300-acre campus. Destinations included the Fitness Center, Rock Wall, the Learning Center, the Lighthouse, Campus Security, the Chaplain’s Office, and more.
A Marlin Celebration capped off the day with music and dancing, sand volleyball, raffle prizes, snow cones, and a dunk tank that drenched Dean of Freshmen Jason Seward ’05.
