Women’s Basketball Player Awarded Prestigious ODAC Scholar-Athlete Award
Senior forward Maggie Davis sports a 3.88 grade point average, is majoring in mathematics and averages 10.8 points per game.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan College senior Maggie Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Home schooled) was presented with one of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) post-season awards Wednesday, Feb. 24. Davis was named the 2010 ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete in women's basketball at the annual awards banquet at the Civic Center in Salem, Va.
Davis' scholar-athlete award was the highlight of the banquet for Virginia Wesleyan, as is the first time a Marlin women’s basketball student-athlete has received the award. Davis, a mathematics major, currently owns a 3.88 grade point average. She has been named to the College's Dean’s List for seven straight semesters, and has been as a member of the ODAC’s Academic Honor Roll for three years. It is the second prestigious academic award this month for Davis, who was named a 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District honoree earlier. On the court, Davis has notched career highs in points (22) and rebounds (18). She is averaging 10.8 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per contest and is currently third in the league in blocked shots with 39. Over her three seasons, Davis has compiled 661 points, grabbed 575 rebounds and blocked 88 shots in 95 games played.
It was one of four awards for Virginia Wesleyan’s women's basketball, as senior Tonia Jones (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and Davis earned second team and honorable mention All-ODAC honors respectively, and sophomore Jocelyn Spencer (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) was named to the league's Sportsmanship team.
While the awards were the first of their kind for Davis, the All-ODAC honor was the third for Jones, putting her in elite company. Nancy Mattox ('97-'00) and Martha Sainz ('91-'93) are Virginia Wesleyan's only other three-time honorees. Mattox is the only four-time honoree. Jones has been a scoring leader for the Marlins for four seasons and is currently ranked No. 8 among the program's all-time scorers with 1,204 points. She is also No. 6 in steals (194), No. 7 in three-pointers made (110) and free throws made (216), No. 14 in rebounds (481) and No. 16 in assists (208). Jones currently averages 12.6 points per game and is ranked in the top 10 in the ODAC in four statistical areas, including No. 1 in three-point field goal shooting accuracy (45.1).
Spencer has provided Virginia Wesleyan with some timely scoring and rebounding throughout the season. She is averaging 5.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, and ranks No. 3 on the team in assists (47).
