Veterans can now enroll tuition-free at Virginia Wesleyan College.
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Recent military veterans who have defended the United States can enroll tuition-free at Virginia Wesleyan College through the Department of Veteran Affairs Yellow Ribbon Program, which aids veterans who want to further their education.
Scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program apply to those veterans under the Post 9-11 GI Bill enacted in 2008, who have served on active duty for at least 36 months since Sept. 11, 2001.
“Virginia Wesleyan College is uniquely positioned in the Hampton Roads area, which is home to one of the nation’s largest concentrations of military personnel,” said President Billy Greer. “We are thrilled to offer Virginia Wesleyan’s high-quality education to those men and women who have so honorably served our country.”
The Yellow Ribbon Program takes effect Aug. 1 and will allow eligible veterans to begin coursework as early as the fall 2009 semester. Veterans and dependents must be certified through the Department of Veteran Affairs, and will be admitted to Virginia Wesleyan on a first-come, first-served basis. Up to 40 students will be accepted into the program.
To be eligible, a student must qualify for the federal programs and meet Virginia Wesleyan admission requirements. The award is renewable for students who maintain satisfactory academic progress and conduct.
Students participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program also are eligible for other Veterans Administration benefits, including living allowances and a $1,000 annual stipend for books and supplies.
