Credit for Prior Learning Experiences
Transfer credit is awarded based on official transcripts from regionally accredited institutions, sent directly to Batten University from all previously attended colleges. Transfer grades are not included in the Batten University GPA. The transfer evaluation is completed by the Office of the Registrar after admission and recorded on your Transfer Evaluation Report in WebAdvisor.
Students may receive a maximum of 32 semester hours of credit for all prior learning experiences combined. Expand a category below to learn more.
Batten University grants course credit for Advanced Placement exams of the College Entrance Examination Board. Credit is not awarded for both an AP exam and an IB exam in the same subject.
Entering students may apply for credit in disciplines where they have taken CLEP examinations and achieved a score at or above the 50th percentile. Current students must receive prior approval before taking CLEP examinations for credit. Credit may be received for scores on general examinations and subject examinations in areas applicable to Batten University's curriculum.

Batten University offers guaranteed admission to transfer students from Tidewater and Thomas Nelson Community Colleges upon successful completion of an associate degree or 60–64 hours. All transferable credits from the transfer-oriented associate degree program, not to exceed 64 credits, will be accepted and students will be granted junior standing. A merit scholarship will be awarded based on cumulative GPA.
As courses change over time, it is the student's responsibility to confirm the transferability of specific courses. While every effort is made to keep this guide complete and accurate, errors can occur. Incorrect additions and/or deletions will not take the place of actual course requirements.
Batten University grants advanced placement and/or credit for a score of 5 or higher on Higher Level examinations in the International Baccalaureate program. The IB guide lists courses that have been reviewed and approved for credit by the university's academic departments. Additional IB courses not listed may be reviewed as necessary.
No credit is awarded for Subsidiary Level examinations. Credit is not awarded for both an IB exam and an AP exam in the same subject.
Batten University follows the guidelines set forth by the American Council on Education (ACE) when granting credit for educational experiences in the armed services. Veterans should submit an appropriate transcript (such as a Joint Services Transcript). Credit awarded must be equivalent to courses offered at Batten University or logical extensions thereof and is subject to review by faculty in the relevant academic field.
Batten University follows the guidelines set forth by the American Council on Education (ACE) when granting credit for professional certifications. In some cases, professional training and/or certification may earn ACE credits. Official paperwork should be submitted by the student to the Registrar's Office for evaluation.
Virginia Beach Police Department Basic Recruit Academy
After an extensive review of the curriculum, Batten University awards 32 credits for work completed during the Virginia Beach Police Department Basic Recruit Academy. Students must be active-duty Virginia Beach Police Officers who have completed the academy training program.
Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office Academy
After an extensive review of the curriculum, Batten University awards 23 credits for work completed during the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office Academy. Students must be active-duty Virginia Beach Deputies who have completed the academy training program.
Batten University awards undergraduate academic credit for knowledge acquired through professional and lived experience — such as civic, community, or volunteer work, or in-service training that occurred after high school and prior to matriculation at Batten University. Up to 12 credits may be awarded for this category.
Eligibility
All undergraduate students are eligible to apply for credit for prior learning experiences per the guidelines above.
Credit Limits
Batten University accepts up to 12 credits for professional and lived experience, and no more than 32 credits combined for all prior learning experiences (professional and lived experience, military credit, professional certifications, CLEP, AP, and IB).
How to Apply
To apply, submit a written request to the Registrar's Office that includes:
- A statement describing the experience you would like considered for credit. Guidelines for this statement are available from the Registrar's Office. Applications must be complete to be considered.
- Applications will be reviewed by the Batten University Registrar's Office.
- Once accepted, credits will be applied to degree requirements. Credits may only be applied toward major or minor requirements with approval of the department chair.
