The Office of Global Engagement provides Batten University students with the opportunity to study away — internationally or domestically — for one week to one year. We offer advising, application assistance, pre-departure support, and grant opportunities so that every student has a realistic path to a study away experience.
Whether you’re looking for a faculty-led course in Ecuador over January Term, a semester at a university in Tokyo, or an independent summer program in Florence — Global Engagement can help you get there.
Study Away Options
Batten University offers short-term, mid-length, and long-term study away options — and grant funding to make them accessible.
Study Away Courses
Faculty-led courses that include a travel component to a domestic or international destination. Many run during January Term; others during the academic year or Summer Session. Global Engagement Course Grants and SHIPP grants are available to help cover the cost.

Study abroad independently during the summer through one of Batten’s partner providers — in Florence, Rome, Tokyo, Taiwan, England, and beyond. SHIPP grants provide program fee and tuition assistance for summer study abroad.

A competitive semester study abroad program open to second, third, and fourth year students. Study at one of Batten’s exchange partners in more than 50 countries — and earn credit toward your major, minor, or general education requirements. Financial aid applies.

Student Spotlight
Stone Sterling ’25 — Lakeland University Japan, Tokyo
Global Scholar Stone Sterling ’25 spent the Fall 2024 semester studying abroad at the Jane P. Batten & David R. Black School for International Studies at Lakeland University Japan. During his time there, he fully immersed himself in Japanese culture and took the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the country.
Past Global Scholars have studied abroad in Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Jordan, Malta, Spain, the United Kingdom, and many other countries.
