MAEd Admission Requirements

The mission of the Teacher Education Program at Batten University is to prepare reflective, engaged teachers of good character who will adhere to the highest standards of professionalism. To ensure we fulfill that mission, students interested in secondary 6–12 or preK–12 licensure must meet the criteria below and apply for admission to the 5th-Year MAEd.

Students interested in pursuing initial licensure in an approved endorsement area are encouraged to apply as early as their sophomore year, but no later than October 1 of their senior year. Admission is rolling; decisions go out approximately 4–6 weeks after submission of all required materials.

Licensure Track — Admission Requirements

For students pursuing a Virginia teaching license in a secondary (6–12) or preK–12 endorsement area.

Requirement Suggested Timeframe
Complete and submit the MAEd online application As early as sophomore year; no later than October 1 of senior year
Submit passing scores on the Praxis Subject test for your content area Take and pass prior to application; required for admission
Successfully complete a bachelor’s degree in the endorsement area with appropriate content coursework for the MAEd track Seek advising from education and content faculty from sophomore or junior year through graduation
Achieve a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.8 Monitor your GPA throughout — conditional admission may be available with faculty approval below 2.8

Non-Licensure Track — Admission Requirements

For students pursuing the MAEd degree without seeking initial Virginia teaching licensure.

Requirement Suggested Timeframe
Complete and submit the MAEd online application As early as sophomore year
Successfully complete a bachelor’s degree in the endorsement area with appropriate content coursework for the MAEd track Seek advising from education and content faculty from sophomore or junior year through graduation
Achieve a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.8 Monitor your GPA throughout — conditional admission may be available with faculty approval below 2.8

Switching tracks: Students in the non-licensure track who wish to switch to the licensure track must meet all licensure-track admission criteria by October 15 (for a spring full-time internship) or March 15 (for a fall full-time internship). Without fulfilling all admission and continuation requirements — including passing Praxis scores, dispositional assessments, and practicum professor recommendation — students cannot be admitted to the licensure track.

If admission is granted prior to graduation from Batten University, it will be conditional upon successful completion of coursework in progress and receipt of degree.
