Batten University faculty lead short-term study away courses to domestic and international destinations during January Term, the academic year, and Summer Session. These are credit-bearing courses that travel — one to three weeks that can genuinely change how you see the world.

January 2027
SPAN 310: Cultural Encounters
January 7–16, 2027
Examines the relationship between geography, natural and urban landscapes, and the cultural richness of Ecuador. Students visit Quito, Cuenca (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and smaller villages in the Napo Region.

BIO 375/EES 250: Topics in Tropical Biology
January 10–21, 2027
An intensive field experience in neotropical ecosystems — rainforests, coral reefs, mangroves, and caves. Descriptive studies of local flora and fauna combined with an in-depth investigation of a topic of interest. Field activities include moderately strenuous exercise under varied weather conditions.

EDUC 480: Field Experiences in Education
January 14-22, 2027
Hands-on field research on water quality, biodiversity, and ecosystem health from the slopes of Orosi Volcano to the Pacific coast. Work alongside scientists, compare environmental education practices in Costa Rica and the U.S., and explore diverse ecosystems through snorkeling, zip-lining, beach exploration, and more.

Spring 2027
APMU 211: Batten Choirs — Camerata
April 15–19, 2027
Camerata joins choirs from around the country to perform the World Premiere of Rob Redei’s “Stardust Returning” at Carnegie Hall. Students also experience a Broadway production, a performance at the Metropolitan Opera, and opportunities to explore the arts in New York City. A successful Camerata audition is required.

Funding Your Trip
Global Engagement Course Grants
Available to help offset the cost of study away courses taken during the academic year. SHIPP grants are available for courses taken during Summer Session.
Eligibility
- Enrolled full-time at Batten University during the current academic year
- Minimum GPA of 2.7
- Demonstrate significant financial need (FAFSA Student Aid Index and Need Statement)
- Submit application to your chosen course before the grant deadline
- Pay the study away course deposit before the grant deadline
Award Criteria
- Financial need and academic performance
- Quality of the Global Engagement Statement
- Priority given to students in 4-credit courses and first-time grant recipients
